Beyerdynamic Amiron Wireless Copper - few steps forward few steps back

Before this review starts i would like to give a massive thanks to stars picker audio library in letting me try out several headphones to put this headphone in a better context, they were super kind and accommodating.

When apple announced it's new top of the line headphones sadly named the Airpods Max, it became the butt end of many jokes, like the bra case or handbag case and not to mention some controversies, and many are led to wonder... are there better wireless headphones?

the answer is well...

i know, i know. its weird how i can give nuanced answers but then again so is real life. but i think i can tell you why, you see i am a beyerdynamics fan really, the first headphone that didn't sound crap that i owned was the Custom One Pros and despite its several flaws (related to durability of some of its parts) i still loved them for how they sounded, and oh my god the bass... so much BASS, and bear in mind it wasn't the sort of bass that Sony headphones are known for, no, the bass when cranked up to its highest setting can rumble your head. its somehow beyerdynamic managed to cram an entire concert speaker into a pair of well bass glass canons and still managed to keep the treble and mids intact and sounded great...i mean really its amazingly fun and if you have 150 US dollaridoos and you find one, you should buy them and enjoy them or at least borrow a set from your mates and try it and you will know why i call them glass canons.

move forward to 2018 and beyer releases their rendition of a wireless headphone with outrageous pricing that puts the apple airpods max to shame, the amiron wireless and its much admittedly more expensive and definitely better looking in shades of copper orange and black ,amiron wireless copper. but at close to 600 US dollars, is it worth the price? well..... just read on. i mean i got these for a decent deal at 504 dollars shipped, but still quite a sum.

Unboxing

The unboxing experience is admittedly very beyerdynamic in the sense that there is no real unboxing as the headphones themselves are in it's exclusive?? carrying case with a copper plaque on the carrying case.

upon opening the unfortunately shaped carrying case, you find a cardboard card that states "A Unique Piece of Craftsmanship Congratulations! You have purchased your psersonal Amiron wreless copper. The Amiron wireless copper contains elements of real copper. due to the natural features of copper, colour variations and changes may occur. these variations add to the unique characteristics of your headphone and represent perfect imperfections." or in actual human words " the copper on your amiron wireless may or may not turn green or blue, fade or anything that can happen to real copper over time" or for the cultured among us "Wabi-Sabi and Patina". continuing after reading the unfortunately beautiful card with a bad placement of title on the English side and then reading the German side of the card and trying your hardest not to botch the pronunciation

, you are greeted to the headphones themselves and the accesories it comes with a 3 pole 3.5 mm to 4 pole 3.5mm audio cable with inline microphone and a usb type a to type c cable and that's all. more accesories than what you get with an apple airpods max then.

"GOT EMMM"

after that you find the quick start guide and all the documents that not only that i'm pretty damn sure you will treat it the same way you read the facebook terms of service, ignored, you also threw them immediately to the bin after opening the lid of the box. i'm not judging.

Review

but first, let me spare you the time and effort and questions, the first thing you should do right about when you just opened the box is to smell it the new headphone smell, relish it and then take the earpads off and either throw them away or keep them somewhere else or take out your grievances about your now financial insecurity on them, then proceed to order new earpads for these. i mean it, i recommend any memory foam earpad thicker than the stock pads but not too thick just medium thicc. the reason why you would want to do this is because the stock pads suck. no really, they didn't seal well on my head or practically anyone who owns this. i'm saving you time here, my recommendation is stick with either leather or closed pads.

now that i have saved you some time, lets get over the physical overview of the headphones themselves, on the right side of the headphones you will find the all of the buttons , touch surface and ports, a usb type c for charging and data, 3.5 mm audio and a sometimes stubborn power button. and if you are or know someone who works in beyerdynamic i have one thing to say, WRONG SIDE OF THE HEADPHONES. its fine if you put the USB c on the right side of the headphones, that's fine by me but to put them on the right side, WHAT THE HELL beyer, WHY? and i realize that while i can rant about port and button placement all i want, they beyerdynamic will probably ignore what i have said and not bother about it, its not the first time the germans have placed buttons and ports on the wrong side.

now then onto the sound, its beyerdynamic sound with less of the painful treble, and these do not sound the same as the amiron homes and now i'm left wondering, what do these sound like? i would really love to just loan these to Crinacle for a day just to get a audio response graph and compare these to every other beyerdynamic headphone, if i were to make a guess now, i'd say these sound like a more relaxed version of the dt 177X go. i don't know i never tried the T5 gen 3s or the 1770's or 177x's to know so don't quote me on that. but what these do have is bass and less sub-bass but even then its reasonably recessed to a point where if you really like your headphones to give you heart attack levels of bass you'll want to EQ the hell out of these cans.

soundstage wise i can't say shit. i don't have a large enough sample size to really know how wide these sound but i can say its ok it's wider than the Custom one pros but then again what do i know?

what i can say though is the build quality... and Beyerdynamic. get a pen and paper and write this shit down. while build quality is amazing, the weight and materials is standard for the par and expected given the price point i mean its 600 dollars here if i paid 600 and got beats level of build and quality i would just rant on about how much of an overpriced shit box it would be. i like the design as well but the headbands has the unfortunate downside which the ends will no longer be held inside its holding place and simply come out of the headband yoke,

i owned these for less than a month and i can tell you right now, the headband while cushy and plush and definitely comfortable, will fly out of the headband slider when iether you pull the wire even a little bit or just putting them on your head or just putting them on an object, so here's a suggestion to anyone at Beyerdynamic. compress the ends into a solid piece so that way it won't simply fly out whenever or just cut a notch for the wires so the fabric doesn't fly out or failing that, get a headband cover to hide the shame, or the last one which applies to Beyerdynamic right now, Give us Leather Headbands or the Headband from the T5s Don't get me wrong here, i like them, i like the design but the fact they simply come out just infuriates me. unfortunate headband and earpad situation aside. overall i can't recommend these to anyone at all, especially when the DROP (formerly Massdrop) panda exists, that's literally a redesigned and rebranded OPPO PM3 headphones with THX AAA amps built into it, and it costs half the price, ok given you won't get earpad support or the fact that the headband is silicone or the fact that instead of a touch surface its a nipple and it doesn't have any "Modern" quality of life features expected of a wireless headphone, but then some of those cases applies to these as well. it doesn't pause anything when you put them down, it doesn't have configurable touch surfaces but that's honestly the most i can critique about these headphones.

So in summary then, if you have tons of money swimming around and you really wanted a dt1770 but wireless and without the let's be honest jank solution of hooking it up to a wireless dongle, sure go ahead, it probably will work but just order a new pair of earpads it will increase the seal around your head and it won't fall off easily compared to the stock pads, i recommend dekoni elite sheepskin ( I'm serious, you are spending 600 dollars on a pair of headphones i honestly believe that with that kind of money you have more than enough to afford a 60 dollar pair of earpads). if you don't have tons of money and you're a cheap a****** buy the drop panda or sony WF-1000xm4 and turn the noise cancelling off. the amiron wireless honestly not worth much of a buy if you're on a budget, unless its on a really good deal or you can get one second hand for less than 500, 200-300 would be an absolute steal i mean that's DROP panda or DT177x go money, at that point you should, assuming its in good condition of course.
